Dislocated Limb? Visit Mediq Urgent Care Today

A dislocation happens when your bones come out of their normal position at a joint. This usually happens as the result of an impact injury. Some of the most common dislocations include:

  • Shoulders
  • Jaws
  • Elbows
  • Hips
  • Ankles
  • Fingers

A dislocation can be incredibly painful, which is why you’ll need to seek medical attention as soon as possible. However, it’s generally not a medical emergency, which means you can visit an urgent care facility to have your dislocation treated instead of going to the emergency room, which often takes longer and is more expensive.

Symptoms of a Dislocation

It can sometimes be difficult to tell whether you’ve dislocated a bone or broken it. However, a dislocation generally heals quicker if you’ve received proper treatment for it. You’ll want to seek the professional opinion of a doctor to properly diagnose your injury as a dislocation. Some of the common symptoms of a dislocated bone include the following:

  • There’s a noticeable deformity at the site of the injury. You can often tell if a bone has popped out of place by the way it looks. For example, if you dislocate your shoulder (one of the most common dislocations), the arm bone is popped out of the socket, which you’ll be able to see.
  • You feel intense pain. Dislocating a bone hurts a lot. It will also hurt to move the affected area and you’ll have trouble doing so.
  • You experience swelling and discoloration at the site of the dislocation.
  • If you’ve dislocated your shoulder, you may experience a numb or tingling sensation in your neck or arm area. You may also experience spasms.

Treating a Dislocation

If you’ve dislocated a bone, you’ll want to seek medical attention right away. The only way to relieve the injury is to have the bone put back into place. To help deal with the pain before seeking medical attention, ice the area and make sure that you move the affected area as little as possible.

Once you seek medical attention, you’ll be asked about the symptoms and how you experienced the injury. An X-ray may be taken to ensure that there’s no other additional damage other than the dislocation. In some cases, you may have also experienced nerve damage, muscle damage, or breaks in addition to the dislocation.

The bone will then be manually be worked back into its proper alignment. If you’re experiencing a lot of pain, the medical professional may give you a muscle relaxant or a sedative before they put the bone back in place. Once your bone has been put back into its proper alignment, the pain should diminish quickly. You may need to ice or heat the affected area afterward.
